Message from the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologist (PSA) President

Dear Colleagues,

alcantara-anesthesiaTogether with our members from the Northern Mindanao Chapter, I am pleased to invite you to attend the 2009 Midyear Convention as it takes off on May 1 – 2 at the Xavier Estates Sports and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro, the City of Golden Friendship. For over five decades, the PSA has remained proactively responsive to the members’ changing needs specially in providing timely information and updates that would further hone one’s ability to deliver quality, safe and effective anesthesia care. With the theme, RIDING THE WAVES OF CHALLENGES IN ANESTHESIA CLINICAL PRACTICE, you will find that once again, the Scientific Committee, chaired by Dr. Ma. Minerva P. Calimag, assisted by Drs. Rosa Gandahari A. Carpio and Jocelyn V. Ucab, has put together a program of exceptional educational value. The conference theme is indeed very appropriate and timely for in this day and age, the world of our specialty is no longer what it used to be.

To start this special event on the right track, a pre-convention workshop/wet clinic demonstration will be held at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center on April 30 – Thursday afternoon. Chaired by Dr. Arnold D. Grageda, with the assistance of Drs. Henry R. Fabe, Roan J. Jocson and Fereve S. Pacatan, participants will be given ample opportunity to share and discuss ideas on airway management, monitoring, anesthesia drugs and techniques. This activity was made possible through our partners in the anesthesia industry: Progressive Medical, Baxter Philippines, Abbott Laboratories, Hospira and Schering Plough.

Another exciting activity will be the Second Patient Safety Workshop, organized by the PSA Safety and Quality Assurance Committee under Drs. Florian R. Nuevo, Lucille L. Lim and Jocelyn V. Ucab, as we continue to give emphasis and place patient safety issues front and centre. With the generous sponsorship of LR Imperial, the workshop entitled “Bigger Strides in Anesthesia QA” will be held at the convention venue on Thursday morning of April 30.

We are delighted to offer for the nth time the Tagisan ng Talino contest elimination rounds for our training residents. Sponsored by B. Braun and aptly titled; “Itaktak Mo, Utak Mo”, training residents from Visayas and Mindanao will once again engage in a ‘battle of the brains’ to determine who will survive and join the finals in October. I encourage all members across the country to watch, give support to our young colleagues and join in the camaraderie on April 30, 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon at the country club of Xavier Estates.

Dr. Hiyasmin T. Hernandez, Local Chapter President and Organizing Chair, and her energetic committee have been busy organizing events to entertain delegates in Cagayan de Oro. The social program includes a Welcome Reception, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, a Golf Tournament (organized by Dr. Rene Antonio S. Gaid) and the Fellowship Night which will, as always, be the social highlight of the Annual Meeting. Furthermore, with the assistance of Dr. Philip Robert Briones, sightseeing tours and activities (white water rafting, canopy walk) within the city and neighboring provinces (Camiguin) will be made available to all delegates who would want to maximize their stay. The local trade exhibits as arranged by Drs. Mario Rosario B. Fernandez and Emma M. Sumndad, will showcase local products the region has to offer – from the most colorful sarong made in Lanao del Norte to the sweetest pineapple grown in Bukidnon.

psa-2009-my-posterThe Organizing Committee through Dr. Ana Victoria V. Gotil, has negotiated special conference rates at the different hotels within the city limits and areas near the convention venue. Information on these hotels, as well as airline travel schedule, is included in the registration program. Please make your own hotel and airline reservations early to avoid disappointment.

I urge you to register early to take advantage of the substantial savings offered by our “early-bird” rates. The PSA is also extending a special rate to allied health professionals and discounted registration for retired members and those who are over age 60 but are still active members of the society.

At this point in time, allow me to congratulate and thank everyone who has contributed in organizing this convention, specially the officers and members of the Northern Mindanao Chapter. This special event is a testament to their strong drive and determination in meeting the challenges to come up with a program tailored not only for clinical and non-clinical discussions and workshops but fellowships as well as sports activities.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our proactive partners in the pharmaceutical and anesthesia industries for their generous support of the advocacies and projects of the society: Abbott Laboratories, Endure, Medical One, Baxter, Pfizer, Patriot Pharmaceuticals, Titanium Implants, LR Imperial, Westmont, Biomedis, Astellas, Schering Plough, Fresenius Kabi, B Braun, JS Quest, RG Meditron, Hospira, Health Solutions, Medical Center Trading, Pharmalink, Macropharma, and Unilab. With their continued assistance and our members’ active participation, there is no doubt that PSA will be able to navigate the ‘turbulent waters’ , rise above the waves and stay afloat in these challenging and changing times.

To our members, I encourage you to come and learn with us, and share the experience with your fellow anesthesiologists.
